Planning
On the far left, our class made thumbnails (3 per 30 seconds) during a practice session that we had no clue would tie into our actual project; the only given rules were to use shapes - 5 Rectangles, 2 Circles, & 1 Triangle - & connect them to each-other in any orientation. The result of the session is shown on the left - each box with shapes in various positions. Once we were actually told that the project was to make characters from these shapes, I immediately started looking for figures within these shapes. A lot of my original ideas were related to anxiety, a theme common in my life & many others; I reflected this in my sketches through closed-off or slouched positions, along with tentacles & eyes swarming the person. The idea was strong; however, I wanted to give myself more freedom towards making standout characters that displayed their personality through clothing & environment. I also wanted something a little lighter in tone. After searching through my thumbnails, I actually rotated the paper upside-down to find the character I drew, which to me looked like an angel. During the process phase I made a conscious decision to make his wings mechanical & scrapped to build his personality as a mechanic that designed & built his own wings.
After I figured out what I wanted to make, I decided to try a new medium: ink. I practiced using it on Cold-Pressed & Hot-Pressed board, making strokes at different pressures to create different results. During the process though - to reiterate - I did change to digital media to help push the piece more towards what I intended.
